According to stories, the Northern Pike and Muskellunge species are predatory creatures that threaten anglers. Around various waters where the Pike and Muskies swim, those in motor boats are clearing the water, as the stories terrify amateur anglers. The fact that these fish are predators is true; however, the notion that Muskies and pike are deviant species is outrageous. Sure, the fish will put up a fight, but would you if you had a sharp object in your mouth?

Pike and Muskies are challenging predators in water, since these fish will take on fish larger than themselves. While the Muskies and pike are dangerous to other species, professional anglers enjoy lining the fish due to its feisty challenging nature.

To become an expert angler within the Pike and Muskellunge territories anglers have to take the stories about these predatory species and put it behind them. Rather anglers are advised to consider Pike and Muskie behavior and the nature of its physical makeup.

Another fish that are in the same family as the Northern Pike and the Muskellunge is the pickerel. This fish is very much related to the other fish. Yet, Pickerel belong more to the Pike family, which pickerel’s technical name is Esocidae.

Pickerel are smaller fish that usually weigh around 5 pounds. Pickerel is mentioned in this article, simply because anglers will use the same tactics to catch the smaller fish as they would use to catch Northern Pike and Muskies. Pickerel is a North American fish, which emerges from the family of pike and is a fierce predatory species. Esox Niger is its Latin name.

Pickerel often hybridizes with the Esocid species, which common species is the hybrid dubbed the Tiger Muskie. In fact, Tiger Muskies are a Pike-Muskie crossbred. Tiger species are distinctly spotted for their rare vertical bars. Since Pike often spawn earlier than common Muskies, Fish Hatcheries still make up crossbred stocks. The stocks are found in waters around the United States. Moreover, the crossbred species grow in figures, which parent fish are typically stems of the Hybridized Vigor. Once the fish start to mature however, they take on a new name. Since Tiger fish due to their lifespan, do not grow to common size, the Tigers are often shorter than other related species.

These fish have a lot in common but there are several differences. Muskies have a selection of latitude worldwide, but the fish commonly swim waters around Mexico, Canada, North America, and various areas around the United States. Like Pike, Muskies produce the same amount of eggs, yet the Muskies do not expend as far north as the pike species. In fact, Pike will feast on Muskies, which reduces its population.

Muskies and Pikes are cool water species. The smaller Muskies and Pike can handle water temperatures at 67, and up to 72 degrees. Yet the larger fish, i.e. the fish above 30 inches are classified as coldwater species. The larger pike can stand water temperature at 50 degrees. Pike will often spawn and feed in coldwater as well. Muskies on the other hand can stand warm water. Around various lakes, rivers, streams, etc throughout Michigan you will find the Northern Pike.

Another difference between the Pike and the Muskie is that Anglers can catch Northern Pikes at anytime in the year, yet to catch Muskie during cold months it is seldom possible. Muskies are finicky fish, which are harder to catch over the Northern Pike. If you are planning a bass fishing trip with the intents of catching Muskies and Pike, learn some tactics before heading to the waters.

Whether you are on a new lake, or on one that you call home, the main purpose is to locate and catch as many fish as possible. Each body of water has an endless supply of different forms of structure and cover in a variety of depths and water conditions. You can use many types of fishing equipments to be able to get a lot of fish in a proper and legal way, so we need to take good care of our equipments used for catching fish.

Here are some bass fishing equipment tips to be remembered:

• Keeping your feet dry. Seal skin sox, a waterproof pair of shoe that can be worn in any shoe. It will help you a lot in putting your boat in a low lake that calls for a need for you to step in the water too push off, by doing this your feet will be dry all day.

• Keeping your rods good as new. It is nice to look at, especially when you always keep your rod clean. Just use a simple prep pad in cleaning the cork handles on the rod. If the cork of your fishing rods is very untidy then it makes your rods look like hundred years older than it really is. Take a very light grade sand paper and sand the cork handles, you will find out that all the dirt will go away leaving you with a brand new looking fishing rod. Plus it will make your rod last longer.

• Hi- tech basin. Handheld computer and organizers such as the palm pilot can be very helpful to the bass angler. You may be able to log conditions, creating your own checklist to avoid forgetting stuffs, and store the numbers of your new friends you’ve met along the way. You can also download map for your destinations and when you reach home you can easily access all the information to your home computer for future purposes.

• Being prepared. Always carry equipment and parts in the boat just in case some failures or problems occur.

• Batteries. Always check if you have a good connection. Take care of your battery. Always bring a spare for emergency purposes.

• Being organized. Instead of using a plastic filing box, and some hanging folders why don’t you just make an article and label them with general bass angling headings and file your articles as you finish them. Subscribing to a lot of fishing magazines and reading a lot of good articles will be able to help you for your future reference. You can put up a mini library that’s all about bass fishing.

• Boat bearings. Many anglers forget to check their wheel bearings on their boat trailers. Every spring when you get your boat out of storage, always have your bearings checked. This could save you from a serious accident with your boat

• Rod basic. The most accurate casting is accomplished when bait casting equipment is cast overhand. Bait casting gear is extremely well suited for “targeted” fishing. On some occasions placing a lure under a boat dock, under over lying limbs or between pontoon boats may be necessary. In this situation skipping a lure is ideal. A spinning outfit is perfect for this chore. Be versatile and be able to use both types of equipment.

• Graphite rods. The biggest killer of graphite rods is impact against a hard object. It may not break in that spot the day it happens but there will be a weak spot at that point. Keep this in mind when stowing rods for travel. If you are keeping them on the deck, strap them flush against the deck so that the parts of the deck aren’t rapping against it during travel.

If you are storing them in a locker, do the same or put them in a horizontal holding system, where they won’t hit the side or floor of the locker. If you are the non boater and your partner doesn’t have room in his locker, try to find the spot that minimizes the repeated bouncing they will take if they are laid over the gunwale. If you have to, lay them over your leg when running the big engine. It’s never fun to set the hook on a good fish and end up with a three piece rod

What is it in bass fishing that everybody are driven on to engage on such activity? People get fond of bass fishing that is why every trend that they hear about it really catches their interests and as much as possible get into it.

“Where are the what…? Where are the bass!” How many of the anglers (tournament and recreational) go to a body of water you’ve never fished before, drop the boat in the water, then, ask this question to yourself? This is probably one of the biggest topics in bass fishing that an angler should learn more about.

Here you will be getting information on how to locate areas best for bass fishing.
Locating bass and understanding the water would be the number one question among bass anglers today. The next most asked question would be is which baits they should use to catch a “big” bass.

Now when you think about it, there are really only two (2) main topics that go hand-in-hand when it comes to bass fishing. If you understood more about these two, you would definitely become a much better angler, and they are:

1. Knowing how to locate bass.

2. Knowing how to catch bass using all the different techniques, presentations, and baits.

Learning how to locate bass can be somewhat of a challenge to most anglers because there are so many different factors that need to be determined such as:

1. Knowing how to read a map - this is the fundamental skill that you should try to learn because through a map it is easier for you to take on the appropriate location good for bass fishing.

2. Knowing the most practical places to look for Active Bass just after cold fronts and during early spring and late fall periods - weather condition must be especially considered as well.

3. Understanding water depth- this is an important element because the depth or the hollowness of the water will serve as a factor for you to know if it is a good location.

4. Water clarity- it could be easier for you to now have your bass fishing if you are well-oriented about the water clarity of your location.

5. Water temperatures

6. Seasonal patterns- this is in relation with the trend whether bass fishing is seasonal or not.

7. Locating structure areas

8. Finding vegetation areas

But there is more! Being a consistent bass angler is so much more than just getting in your boat, hitting the water, and casting your baits. That’s why bass tournaments are so competitive and exciting, because the more you learn about locating bass the quicker you can start catching them right? And hey, isn’t that half the battle?

Let’s start by looking at a lake map. There are two general types of lake maps that most anglers will use which are referred to as the; “Hot Spot” and “Topographical” maps. The differences between the two is that a “Topo” map shows more detail, and the “Hot Spots” map shows more fishing spots (well, at least they’re supposed to).

The secret (or key) in learning how to use a lake map would be to sector the map. What I mean by this is that I will take the map and study it for a moment (looking for areas where the fish would most likely be.) Next, I will (using a highlighter) divide the map in sections based on how much time I have to pre-fish for a tournament or how many days I have to just fish the body of water for fun.

The size of the sections will vary depending on contours, structure, and how many places I may want to check out during the course of the day based on what the map shows me. I am certainly not one to just cast bait into the water and work it for five minutes and leave; I will try an assortment of baits if I see signs of fish in any given area to try to establish a working pattern.

Here are some key elements that you can usually look for when it comes to locating bass on any given body of water:

1. Vegetation areas

2. Irregular contours

3. Shallow water close to deep water areas

4. Points and point drops

5. Various types of structure

For years businesses have rode on the vast interest Bass fishing has generated. Many people are hooked, pardon the pun, on this hobby and have elevated it to a sport and a passion. Resorts, sports gears and lines have been built and many more aspects have benefited from these interest.

Today, there are more and more people trying to learn and find out what the buzz is all about. Bass fishing is more than just catching a fish. Its now about getting those prized big bass and having the opportunity to show it off. For beginners there are lots more to bass fishing that meets the eye.

First, try to know the lures that you must have to enjoy bass fishing.

And do you know what the top 3 lures for catching Bass are? Although there was no particular gauge that was presented by the researchers, a survey was performed among the pro bass fishermen and it was found that plastic worms was the most patronized and ranking on the second and third place were the spinner bait and then the crank bait.

However, picking one of these 3 is not enough. Some factors are still needed to be considered. Primarily, you must consider if it is better to cover a smaller segment of water thoroughly or skim across a larger area as quickly as possible to find fish. Using a worm is slower, but absolutely effective and is very seductive to Bass. They do best when the fish are schooled over a particular structure.

The problem that usually arise with fishing with a worm is the inability to sense strikes. Usually the inability to sense them is due to a sinker that is too heavy and a line that is too thick.

To help you to overcome this predicament you are advised to use a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers. Here are some of its advantages:

• No moving lead on the line to dampen the feel of a gentle pickup
• You can apply the precise amount of lead to deliver the worm action needed
• It makes it easier for a bass to inhale the worm
• It aids in hook setting
• It’s easier to shake loose from snags
• You can cause the worm to hang virtually suspended over the bottom when fishing shallow water.

To tell how much lead strip is needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Ease it into the water and watch it sink, it should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks to fast, take some off, etc. Make sure to use no heavier than 8-pound mono line - preferably 6 pound.

On the other hand, a Spinner bait can be moved more quickly across the surface and can be bounced on the bottom, sent against a tree limb and moved in many different ways in order to stimulate strikes. It is a great probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free construction.

Lastly, Crank baits cover a lot of water in a hurry. Using them, you can check out a spot without wasting too much time. You can use them for locating fish that may be scattered.

The most important thing is, no matter what lure you select for the particular lake that you are fishing on, you need to make it as easy for the Bass to get at it as possible. Drop that lure right in front of them. Scientists have proven that Bass calculate the amount of energy it will take them to go after the prey.

Discover and learn to use one of those lures that you preferred to use for you to really find enjoyment in bass fishing!

Aside from considering the lures, it is also important to determine the accurate time in going for bass fishing.

Dawn and dusk are definitely when the biggest bass can be brought in. First, remember that bass love ambush spots offering lots of cover from the baitfish. They like to hid, and pounce on their prey.

These bait fish are most active in the early morning or evening. When they feed, bass follow because the baitfish is less aware of threats when they feed. Go out fishing during these times for the best success.

When retrieving an underwater lure in poor light, keep it coming at a steady pace once it is set in motion. This will make it easier for bass to locate and grab it.

The last thing is, don’t bother going out in the dawn/dusk when water is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature wipes out certain aquatics and terrestrials, which nullifies the food chain feeding.

Lures and proper time of going on bass fishing are ample factors only that must be taken into account because other aspects such as water quality considerations and weather conditions are also necessary for you to win the game on bass fishing!

If you are searching for a gemstone, search the Huron River in Michigan, since here you will find a wide selection of bass species. Michigan weather is unpredictable, therefore bring along sunglasses, floppy hats, waders, warm jackets, and a few beers before you head off to Huron River. Do not forget your swimming wear. Along the river, you will find National Parks, recreational centers, metro parks, etc, since Huron River is Michigan’s largest natural resource.

In the Huron River rock bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, panfish, channel catfish, walleye, and related warm water species flock together. In fact, rock bass and smallmouth bass call the Huron River home. Steelhead is similar to rainbow trout, which the silver colored species also swims the Huron River. You will find steelhead fish at the lower end of the river. Michigan has designated a special rearing place for a selection of trout also.

At the top section of the river body or at the headwater is Oakland County. The river flows to Michigan’s great lakes, whereas some areas are confined. In Oakland County, or down around the bend you will come across Moss and Proud Lake. If you bring along a long, suspending fishing rod you can fly-fish along Moss and Proud Lake. Along this area, you will catch trout primarily, including the rainbows and brown trout. Move on downstream if you are hunting bass.

Down along the streams where the water flows freely, you will find the smallmouth bass. Rock bass also swim along free moving waters. Be ware however, since predatory panfish may attract to your bass lure. The lakes that begin action throughout Washtenaw County are the area to land bass as well. A chain of lakes moves along the wide river where boulders, rock riffles supply smallmouth bass a surplus of hiding spots.

Down around the Metro-parks near Delhi and Dexter smallmouth bass move along as well. Michigan has state regulations and laws that protect the fish however, therefore learn the laws before casting your line. Along this area, you will find rock bass, neophyte fly, and some small species. If you want the rock bass, try using imitated crayfish streamers, muddlers, or woolly buggers. Mice, frogs, and minnows will attract smallmouth-surfacing bass.

Smallmouth bass move down Huron River toward Belleville, and Flat Rock. The river flows onward to Lake Erie at this point, therefore leave your waders, and toss your line off shore.

As you move downstream, you will come upon a bulk of Steelheads, which swim at the bottom of Flat Rock Dam. Use stoneflies, gaudy marabou streamers, mayflies, etc to catch the steelheads. Moving further downstream you will stumble upon the Walleye species. Walleye species flock in spring. March and April is a good time to catch the Pearl, double figure class, Zonkers, and related Walleye species.

NOTE: Flies only are allowed during the last Saturday in April. In addition, you cannot keep the trout.

Huron River is open seasonally. During set months the Walleyes, Bass, and Northern Pike are restricted to release. Learn more about the restrictions to avoid trouble.

Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass also have a release restriction. Steelhead has a restricted size limit.

Huron River has a selection of fish, including the largemouth, smallmouth, northern pike, channel catfish, walleye, panfish, carp, rainbow trout, brown trout, steelhead, etc. Learn the best presentations to catch each species.

How far does Huron River spread out?
Huron Rive has a mile distance at around 611. Do not quote me on this figure, yet the quote is strikingly close.

Bass fishing at Sable River is a Michigan adventure. Sable River is around 225 km wide. The river runs throughout the Lower Peninsula in Michigan’s brown trout region. Sable stretches behind Mio, Grayling, and moves into Lake Huron. At this eastern region of the Rockies, you will find the top brown fishing areas around.

The mouth of Sable River flows up to 1500 feet and near the basin; it stretches more than 1900 miles. Around Bradford and Kolka Creek, Sable River has a deep drop. Sable River is often confused with Au Sable. The river is popularly known to Michiganders as the “Big Sable River,” however.

Down along Freesoil Road and near USFS-5199 you will find a wide array of trout. The blue ribbon area also has a selection of brown trout.

As you move down the river, you will come upon slower waters that widen. Near this area, trout swim around, including the Lunker Brown trout. Larger brown trout are further down the river near Lake Michigan. You will pass Hamlin Lake, and move to pike grounds. Continue down the stream and you will run into the larger brown trout.

Continue and you will catch a few riffle rainbows. Further down the streams you will come upon bridges, dams, etc, which is the area to drop your line if you want the large trout. In the surrounding areas you will spot crayfish, caddis, mayflies, Hexagenia, etc, which anglers recommend you catch a few and use them as bait.

Hamlin Lake is around the dam and is between Lake Michigan. In between this area, you will find a selection of steelhead bass and Chinook salmon. You want to check out the best time of month to check out the best fishing conditions, etc. During particular months, the river is shallow, which makes fishing difficult. In addition, learn more about Michigan State fishing laws, since in some areas you will need permission to park at camping sites along the river.

Sable River expends into Lake Michigan, which in between you will find Pere Marquette River, Lincoln River, etc. The rivers are the best areas to enjoy fly-fishing. Brookies, pike, and brown trout swim in this area. At various forks of the river you can fish seasonally, yet you will probably only catch a variety of salmon and steelhead bass.

About Steelhead bass
Steelhead bass are similar to rainbow trout. The fish matures along the North Pacific Ocean. Steelhead is popular sport fish. Check Michigan’s laws, since you may have requirements, or minimal catch limits.

Tip: While fishing on Sable River stops at Ludington State Park, or Huron National Forest.

Along Sable River, you will stumble upon Alcona and Mio Pond. The ponds were described formally as Michigan’s NW/SR (National Wild and Scenic River) during the year 84’. At Sable River Michigan holds an annual Canoe Marathon. If you plan a bass fishing trip to Sable River, unless you plan to canoe, make sure you check with the state first to avoid interrupting the event.

Grab your rifle and prepare for the hunting adventure of your life. Located in Michigan is the famous Rifle River, which houses a wide selection of species, including rainbow, brown trout, brook trout, carp, suckers, northern pike, walleye, white suckers, Chinook salmon, and the fabulous smallmouth bass? Lake Huron also sent over a group of Silver Bullets.

Along Rifle River, you will stretch across interstates, US Highways, State City Road, surrounding roads, River sites, bridges, rapids, major river sections, and minor creek and river regions. You want to bring along your waders, since in various areas you can cast your hook and line into the water, while standing on low soft flats.

Rifle River extends from Cedar River, Tittabawassee River, and so on. Rifle River moves along Omer near U.S. 23, Greenwood Road, Bishop Road, M-55, Melita Road, State Road, Maple Ridge, and Sage Lake Road.

Rifle River is one of Michigan’s shortest, since it only runs 218 miles in each direction. The river however has long shallow medium channel pathways that extend to flat areas. The river also intermingles with deep changing direction holes and rapids. Even when the water is high, you can wade in Rifle River.

Rifle River during heavy rain storms will turn muddy, and during the cold Michigan winter months, the river will freeze. During summer months, canoes run the river, since the waters are clear down the channels. In short, you will not find dams to block your path.

Like many fishing grounds, Rifle River has limitations on size. The first day of October, you can only catch 15-inch salmon and trout, and you are limited to three. The river is accessible all year in specified sections. March 16 has a set limit on northern pike, and walleyes. You must release the fish between the last Saturday in April and on 16 March. On 1 January, you must release bass. You must release brown and brook trout on October 1. The area is restricted around Melita Road Bridge.

Rifle River runs into Saginaw Bay, and begins game area near the opening at Devoe Lake. The lake runs swiftly into Houghton Creek. Along the channel between Devoe and Houghton, and continuing downstream, you can cast your lines, and enjoy fly-fishing.

Michigan waters have a wide selection of fish, including bass, yet most waters contain trout. Some of the best largemouth bass fishing areas is around Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, and Lake Michigan. Actually, if you change the lake settings, to Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior you have spelled HOMES.

Michigan is the land of the Great Lakes. The history of Michigan is amazing, yet in the waters around California, one of the largest bass was missed, since the digital scale was not certified. The bass weighed around 25 pounds and 1 ounce, three counts higher than the World’s Record bass caught in Georgia. The bass caught at Montgomery Lake weighed 22 pounds and 4 ounces.

How to find bass:
You will find bass at Devoe Lake, Lodge Lake, Grebe Lake, Grousehaven Lake, Pintail Pond, Millard Pond, etc. Around Devil’s Wash Basin and Lost Lake, you will find minnows, which you can use to catch the Rifle bass.

NOTE: Get your permit to fish at the Park Headquarters.

After you finish a day,’s fishing you can use your rifle and hunt grouse, geese, ducks, woodcocks, turkey, rabbits, raccoons, squirrel, deer, beavers, mink, otters, muskrats, etc. Check with the state park headquarters to learn more about regulations.

Rifle River has bass, yet you must learn the hot spots to catch the species. Otherwise, you can cruise over to Black Lake where the smallmouth swims in abundance.

How to catch bass in Paw Paw Michigan

Paw Paw River runs through Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Michigan, Lake Michigan, Mottville, Constantine, Colon, and makes up Berrien Springs Dam, Buchanan Dam, Niles Dam, Sturgis Dam, and Union Lake.

Fortunately, I live in the surrounding areas and know the waters well. The anglers, I am familiar with fish at this river and have caught a wide selection of small and large bass. The residential fish include the largemouth, smallmouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, northern pike, carp, panfish, etc. In the winter and summer months you will catch steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, Coho, Chinook salmon, and brook trout. Steelhead also flocks during late summer and spring. The river flows over more than 710 miles.

Paw Paw River is a distant warm water environment. You will find dams along the river in various areas. In the lower sections, cast your line from the shore, since wading at various intersections is stressful. Berrien Springs has a few spots around the area that provide you a boat launch channel. Otherwise, you can access the lake along dams and bridges near roadways.

Bass fishing at Paw Paw River is a common adventure, yet anglers must abide by restricted guidelines laid out by Michigan governing bodies. Limits are stipulated in Michigan’s salmon fishing guidelines. Learn more.

Paw Paw River is accessible all year. However, black bass fishing during the first day in January and the last Saturday prior to Memorial Day, you must release the bass.

Along the inland waterways of Paw Paw River, you will spot smallmouth bass, rock bass, and a few walleyes and northern pike. The bass are noticeable at mainstream. Wading areas are spotted throughout the inland waterways therefore bring your waders.

Paw Paw River spreads through Watervliet Michigan also. The head dam along the river is low, which attracts steelhead. The steelheads often swim upstream. As you move upstream, you may come upon Coloma, Michigan and continue onto the two-minute Rivers near St. Joseph River. St. Joseph River dips directly into Lake Michigan. Fly fishing takes place along these areas. Gallien River extends over to one of Michigan’s popular beaches. The beach channels over to the border of Michigan and Indiana. Here you will come across New Buffalo, which is only about one hour from Chicago. Throughout this area, brown trout and steelhead run wild.

Continue upstream you may want to cast your line near US-12, or move over to the Black River. Actually, the Black River is on the opposite side of New Buffalo, i.e. the river flows through South Haven, Michigan, which is the South Branch. South Haven River is at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, and runs into Lake Michigan. The mid-branch is where cool water fish migrate. During hot days, you may want to cast a line to catch smallmouth, largemouth, rock bass, or related fish.
Paw Paw River has a surplus of hiding spots for bass. Along the river are broken trees, fallen timber, boulders, rocky reefs, etc. Along these areas, you will likely find a selection of bass. Some areas are weedy, which bass flock in these areas as well. In clear water, you likely will find the summer-run, steelheads, etc.

The big catch is at Lake Michigan, or on the St. Joseph River. You can use boats in this area. Guidelines are set up at beach areas, so be sure to follow the rules. Michigan is notorious for cracking down on unlawful acts.

Silver Beach is a popular area to catch large fish as well. To learn more about Michigan bass fishing you will need a huge book, since Michigan has the largest body of water around.

TIP: Take a trip to Cedar River where the largemouth bass swim.

Along the river, you can enjoy fly-fishing near the Middle Branches, or the West Branch. Meadows and heavy wooded areas along the way limit fly-fishing, yet it is possible to land a bass.

Wild browns are noted near two branches, i.e. the starting point of Cedar River, and connected waters along Bard Road. Blue Ribbon trout are often caught in this area. The deeper spots are where you will catch the larger trout.

Upstream you will cross the Middle Branch, near Stage Road. Continue upstream to the North Branch. Along the North Branch, you will meet with the West Branch, which extends to the fly-fishing areas. The larger, blue ribbon trout swim around this section. Travel forward to Wiggins Lake, which is a confined area. The dam extends toward Beaverton. The water is warm in this area, which attracts rock bass and the smallmouth bass.
